Average Wind Speed Comparison
The blue bars are 36-hour average mesonet observed wind speeds during Sandy, averaged over many sites. The red bars are similar averages, but for WRF 10 meter wind speeds at the station locations. Pale bars are all sites and brighter ones are subsets of sites. Observations are adjusted for anemometer height, but not for terrain roughness, which is a much bigger challenge. The numbers at the top are the ratios of the observed to WRF winds. The subsets of sites are arranged according to terrain roughness. It appears that the simulation/observations agreement is better for smoother terrain.
