XDMF header files for Hurricane Isabel data
Hurricane Isabel data is available as a temporal dataset which consists of 48 time steps and 12 variables. The data is stored as binary brick of values per variable per time step.
We would like to load this data easily in Paraview or VisIt, however this requires that we make this data compatible with readers provided by these softwares. There are two easy choices which does not require data duplication/translation by creating a header text file in BOV format or XDMF format. BOV format has a limitation to describe only one variable per file (but can support multiple time steps), so instead we use the XDMF format where one header text file per time step can describe multiple variables. It is also possible to include all the time steps and variables in single XDMF file, but we'll skip that as one file per time step gives us an ability to use any of the files easily without requiring us to download all data.
XDMF format readers in Paraview and VisIt have some quirks
- The vector definition does not work as expected so we need to resort to a function definition inside XDMF
- The compression flag does not work which requires us to unzip the data. Download XDMF header files (~ 4KB) for Isabel data. Unzip and move these XDMF header files to the directory where the uncompressed Isabel data is located.
